Accessibility

I want this site to work for everyone, including people who use a keyboard, a screen reader, magnification or high-contrast settings.

What I aimed for

  • The site aims to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA.
  • Everything works with a keyboard alone, and focus is always visible.
  • Text and controls meet contrast requirements in both the light and dark themes.
  • Pages respect your system's reduced-motion and colour-scheme settings.
  • Diagrams and tables have text equivalents. Tables are real tables with captions and headers.
  • The site has no autoplaying media and no time limits.
  • This site uses Cloudflare Web Analytics to count visits. It doesn't use cookies or collect personal information.

How it was checked

Checked in November 2026 with:

  • automated testing with axe-core, using its WCAG 2 A, AA and AAA rules, on every page in the daytime and night-time themes
  • text contrast measured against the actual rendered background on every page, at four times of the Sydney day and at phone and desktop widths
  • every link and control measured at 44 by 44 pixels or larger
  • every page checked for horizontal scrolling at 320 pixels wide and at 200% zoom
  • the settings, quick-jump, micro-lesson and interactive diagrams operated with the keyboard alone
  • every page checked with reduced motion turned on, through the system setting and the site’s own switch
  • every page checked with JavaScript turned off
  • Lighthouse accessibility audits on the main page types

The site meets WCAG 2.1 at level AA, plus these AAA criteria:

  • 1.4.6 Contrast (Enhanced)
  • 1.4.8 Visual Presentation
  • 1.4.9 Images of Text (No Exception)
  • 2.2.3 No Timing
  • 2.3.3 Animation from Interactions
  • 2.4.8 Location
  • 2.4.9 Link Purpose (Link Only)
  • 2.4.10 Section Headings
  • 2.5.5 Target Size
  • 3.1.4 Abbreviations
